Tour Description

We ride this weekend on the northern part of the Peloponnese. Avoiding the crowded coast we follow beautiful mountain roads towards the town of Kalavrita. Greek history is connected with Kalavrita. It is the place that the Greek independence revolution of 1821 initiated. It is also the place of one of the worse war-crimes of the Nazi occupation forces during WW II. On our return we will follow a different route, visiting “hidden” landmarks before we return to Athens.

Corinth Canal: Near the old canal bridge we will visit what still remains of the German stations that kept guard of the Corinth canal during WW II.
International Buddhist Retreat Center Karma Berchen Ling: is a meditation and retreat center of the Karma Kagyu Lineage of Diamond Way Buddhism. It is one of the three Buddhism centers in Greece.
Krioneri Observatory: On an altitude of 972m the observatory was established in 1972.
Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra: The historic monastery in Kalavrita, one of the oldest monasteries in the Peloponnesian area, is known as the starting point of the Greek Revolution.

DIFFICULTY: LEVEL 2

These routes usually appear in multi-day tours, and in asphalt-paved roads in good condition. During these tours, however, we may also have to travel on dirt roads or at high altitudes with varying weather conditions for a few days (2 or 3). Some routes entail more turns and it is therefore important that riders should have driving experience in such conditions.
